Hours of work: Standard Monday-Friday workweek, 8am-5pm. Occasional need for after-hours work as related to events and other projects.

Position description:

The Seattle Aquarium is seeking two Camp Lead Instructor's (CLI) for its Marine Science Summer Camp. In this role, the CLIs will oversee all operations of their assigned camp sessions which includes facilitating and delegating curriculum and activities (created in advance). CLIs will also support and mentor camp counselors, volunteers and campers in their assigned camp sessions. In this role, CLIs are expected to establish positive relationships with summer program staff, volunteers, campers, and families. Each day varies greatly so the job requires a willingness to adapt from office tasks, to guiding camp staff and volunteers, and instructing classes with participants whose ages vary from early childhood to teen.

Key functions:

  • Ensure the safety of all campers.
  • Foster an inclusive, safe and productive learning environment and interact professionally with campers, their families, volunteers and camp staff.
  • Responsible for setting expectations and tone for campers through the Camp Community Agreements, Marine Summer Camp policies and procedures, and using preventative and behavior management techniques
    1. Makes decisions for behavior management situations within the camp group and communicates decisions to other staff, volunteers and the Camp Admin.
    2. Brings in the Camp Admin team when deciding if a care-giver needs to be contacted and/or if a camper needs to be sent home.
  • Promote behavior conducive to a safe and fun camp environment among all participants and serve as a role model. When appropriate, encourage all campers to participate, observe, discover and appreciate the marine environment while being respectful of their surroundings on and off site.
  • Implement curriculum
    1. It will be the CLI's role to maintain, modify as needed, and execute or oversee the execution of the activities scheduled. Any significant modifications will need approval from the Public Programs Coordinator and Senior Marine Science Educator.
    2. Responsible for materials care and maintenance as well as spacing out of designated supplies to last all summer.
    3. Ensure lessons and activities are running on schedule and keeping track of time in preparation for next lesson/activity/break.
    4. Give feedback on activities and documentation to camp coordinators as prompted, supporting the School & Public Programs team's evaluation efforts.
  • Responsible for keeping track of all camper information through digital records.
    1. This information includes medications needed at camp, potential allergies of campers and other life-threatening conditions/situations, photo release status, etc. as written on release forms.
    2. Log and report daily incidents or interactions of note to Aquarium staff/volunteers and camp families.
    3. Responsible for ensuring all such information is respected and referenced appropriately and remains confidential.
  • Lead small groups of campers of up to 12 individuals, (ages vary from 4 to 14 years old) each week in activities such as marine science lessons; games; and exhibit and behind-the-scenes tours, short field trips along the Seattle Waterfront and day long trip to local beaches or other locations.
  • Greet families every day, sign in/out campers, make sure children are prepared for the day with all proper paperwork, lunch etc., and connect parents and guardians to the appropriate staff and program when applicable.
  • Delegate administrative tasks and the teaching of lessons to camp counselors and youth volunteers as appropriate. Including:
    1. Camper logs
    2. Check-in and check-outs
    3. Classroom activities
    4. Bathroom accompaniment
  • Act as first point of contact for camp counselor and volunteer needs, concerns, and curiosities.
  • Keep constant lines of communication open and active between the camp admin team, camp leads, camp counsellors and volunteers.
  • All Aquarium staff and volunteers are expected to participate in advancing and integrating into their work Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Regenerative practices in alignment with our S.A.L.I.S.H. Values.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required skills and experience:
We will consider various combinations of relevant experience and education to meet minimum requirements.

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Interest in guiding and supporting youth (Ages 4-14) and/or Minimum of one years of experience (paid or unpaid) working with youth in a formal or informal education setting.
  • A combination of lived experience, work experience or education that demonstrates an understanding of environmental education, wildlife conservation, marine sciences, recreation, educational pedagogy, learning psychology, and/or child development (similar to what could be acquired through a completed or ongoing degree or certification in education, biology, environmental science, or related fields).

Skills and abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Preference for second language spoken/written proficiency.
  • Commitment to teamwork and collaboration. Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team player.
  • Leadership and organizational skills.
  • Ability to make decisions in the moment in alignment with organizational policy.
  • Previous experience working with audiences and peers of diverse backgrounds, as well as familiarity with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles. Models active and personal commitment to DEI education; solid understanding and proven literacy around DEI topics. Demonstrates an understanding of the Aquarium's Mission and Values, including Regenerative and Equity work.
  • Keen interest in and ability to work with people of all ages, especially youth, and handle a variety of situations, including those that may be complicated or challenging, with grace, empathy, and tact.
  • Interest and excitement to learn and teach about marine science and conservation
  • The Seattle Aquarium provides training in adult, child, and infant first aid and CPR/AED. Anaphylaxis and epinephrine auto-injector training. This certification is provided on a set day. If unable to attend this portion of the training, certification proof required by first day of camp.
  • Familiarity with MS Office programs: Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, and other basic computer skills.

Working conditions:

  • Heavy to moderate vocal demands to project talks and announcements and to direct an audience in loud areas.
  • High paced, dynamic
  • Attentiveness to children in a setting with varying noise levels
  • Frequent interruptions; walking, standing, sitting for extended periods of time while interacting with youth.
  • Long periods of times indoors/outdoors during all kinds of conditions (rain or shine). Outdoor work may include uneven surfaces, being around bodies of water, and walking more than 100 meters at a time.
  • Set hours/dates of work.

Salary and benefits:

$22.50 per hour. Seasonal staff are not eligible for benefits but accrue paid sick time and are paid an additional $0.75/hour to assist with transportation costs.
